Gnosis (350-300 BC); greek mosaicist. Gnosis is the first mosaicist on record to sign his work.
GNWSISEUOHSEN (GNOSISEPOESEN – ‘Gnosis made this’) is set in white on dark ground of a pebble floor in Pella, Greece. Gnosis is the only artist name surviving on a pebble floor.
The figural panel of the Stag Hunt mosaic, (Pella, Macedonia, 300 B.C.) measures 10’2” high.
