The acanthus ornamentation, beautifully created by the Greeks, was utilized throughout Roman architecture. Some pilasters from Villa de Medici are as perfect specimens of Roman ornament as could be found.
A more stylized version of this ornament became an essential ingredient of the rococo and renaissance revival styles.
